For nearly two decades, The Red Chair Salon (@redchairrocks) has been a welcoming space for everyone. We know times are tough, and self-care is often the first thing to go when budgets get tight. But we believe self-care should happen when you need it most—not just when you can afford it. Below are some answers to some common questions however if you have additional questions - you can reach us directly using the chat button (bottom right) or text / call us at (206) 803-7300.

Common Questions

What exactly is "Pay What You Can"? It is our way of giving back. We offer steep discounts on essential services during specific mid-week hours. Whether you’ve been laid off, are working multiple jobs, or are just feeling the weight of the world—we’ve got you.

Who is this for? If you are a healthcare worker, bartender, cook, or server; if you’re a gig worker, a student, or currently between jobs; if you are just barely hanging on—this is for you.

How do I book? Click the "Book Now" button on our site. Look for the "Community Chair / Pay What You Can" category. Select your service, stylist, and time. Please note: discounts only apply to services listed in this specific category.

Does this impact your staff’s pay? Not at all. We pay our team competitively and consistently regardless of the service price. In fact, this program helps provide our staff with more consistent hours. When the chairs are full, everyone wins.

A Note on Tipping Tipping is entirely at your discretion. However, we humbly ask that if you choose to tip, you do so based on the standard value of the service (cash is always appreciated). The salon absorbs the financial risk and merchant fees to make this promotion possible; if guests use the discount specifically to tip more, the program becomes unsustainable.

What happened to Venmo? We tried it! However, we found it lacked the transparency and ease of use we wanted. Our current booking system is more streamlined and doesn't require extra logins or forgotten passwords.

Is my contribution tax-deductible? No. Because The Red Chair Salon is a small business and not a registered non-profit/charity, contributions to the "Lift Up" fund are not tax-deductible. Think of it as "buying a coffee" for a neighbor!

Where does my money go? 100% of "Lift Up" funds are applied directly to the service costs of Community Chair clients. This helps the salon cover the overhead (products, utilities, and wages) required to keep the initiative running.

Can I donate in honor or memory of someone? Absolutely. If you’d like to make a contribution in someone’s name, just let us know via the chat button or at check-in. We are happy to send a note or acknowledge the gift however you see fit.

Do you accept in-kind donations? Currently, we are focusing on financial contributions to the "Lift Up" fund to keep our stylists working. However, if you have professional hair care products or local resources you'd like to share, feel free to reach out!

The "Lift Up" Option (How You Can Help)

If you’re in a position to give back, you can add a "Lift Up" donation to any service. 100% of these funds go directly toward covering the costs for a neighbor using the Community Chair. You can donate anonymously, target it toward a specific person, or add it to our general fund for those on our waitlist.
